Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - The Indonesian government, in this case the Ministry of Health, will grant free delivery services for the poor starting next year.
"The granting of free delivery services is aimed at reducing the infant death rate to meet the Millennium Development Goals," Ministry of Health Endang Sedyawati said after addressing a discussion on promoting the function and role of planned parenthood clinics to family welfare clinics," at Parliament building in Jakarta Friday.
The other high officials addressing the discussion include Head of the National Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) Sugiri Syarief, member of the House’s Commission IX Subagyo Partodiharjo, and Islamic Mass Guidance Director General of the Regious Affairs Ministry Nasaduddin Umar. She said the Health Ministry provides Rp 1.45 trillion for free delivery services to be disbursed as of next year.
Endang also said that the free delivery program was particularly meant for the poor living in remote villages where infant and maternal death rate was still too high. She made it clear that under the free delivery service program no baby would be withheld because of the lack of delivery cost of their parents.
She said the government is currently still making the technical regulations on the procedures of the number of babies whose delivery will be paid by the government. She also hoped that the drawing up of the technical regulations would be completed in September this year.
