Bantul, Yogyakarta - Indonesia (News Today) - The magnitude-5.0 earthquake that rocked Yogyakarta and environs on Saturday injured nine people and damaged tens of houses, an Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) volunteer said on Sunday.
"All the injured have been admitted to the Panembahan Senopati regional general hospital. Three of them are being treated at the hospital while the others allowed to go home for outpatient treatment," the spokesman for PMI Voluntary Corps in Bantul, Giyarto, said.
The three victims who were being treated at the hospital were Sutilah and Suheti, both of Bawuran village, and Basyir, of Wukirsari village, he said. Both Sutilah and Suheti suffered injuries on their wrists and Basyir on his leg.
"They got injuries after falling roof tiles hit them as they tried to save themselves," he said.
The six patients who were allowed to go home were Pratiwi of the Amanah orphanage in Imogiri, Warjiyem and Muhammad Nurhadi of Segoroyoso village, and Alfianan of Wonokromo village, Dasiah of Pucung village and Anang Supandi of Trimulyo village, he said.
"They suffered blisters and were shocked when the quake struck. But after they received medical treatment they were allowed to go home," he said.
No fatalities were reported in the quake. Giyarto said the quake also damaged tens of houses, most of them in Wukisari village, Imogiri subdistrict, and Segoroyo village, Pleret subdistrict, Bantul district.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said on Saturday the undersea quake was centered 15 km southeast of Bantul town at a depth of 10 km. But the quake was not strong enough to trigger a tsunami, it said.
Yogyakarta and environs were hit hardest by a magnitude-5.9 quake in May 2006, claiming the lives of thousands of people and destroying tens of thousands of houses.
