Palu, Indonesia (News Today) - Police in Palu have issued a shoot-on-sight order to contain armed robberies in the Central Sulawesi provincial capital.
"We will shoot robbers on sight if their action endangers other people," chief of the Palu police resort Adjunct Chief Commissioner Deden Garnada said on Sunday.
The shoot-on-sight order came nearly three days after a group of 12 armed people robbed Bank CIMB Niaga in Medan, North Sumatra, killing a police Mobile Brigade officer and injuring a security guard. The robbers made off with Rp 200 million. Dede said to prevent armed robberies in Palu the police had increased the number of its men deployed at each bank to four.
"We have tightly guarded each vital object including bank," he said.
The four police officers equipped with firearms were divided into two groups with each of them performing their duties for 12 hours in turn, he said.
"The figure does not include bank’s security guards," he said.
He said police had provided tight security at each bank in Palu for a long time and not in the wake of armed robbery at Bank CIMB Niaga in Medan. He also said businessmen and residents who were to take money from banks could contact police for escort.
"Police officers are ready to provide escort free of charge."
Earlier, Chief of the Central Sulawesi Provincial Police Brig. Gen. Muhammad Amin Saleh said he had ordered all his men to step up patrols to anticipate armed robberies at local banks.
"I have ordered all of my men to step up patrols in all areas vulnerable to criminal offenses," he said.
Asked to comment on the increasing number of armed criminal offenses, he said the police had taken preventive steps to create tranquility in the community.
