"The scholarships and school are aimed to encourage a will for learning of autistic students in Makassar," secretary of the Makassar education agency Muyiddin said here Monday.
Autism is a disorder usually of children characterized by lack of response to people and limited ability to communicate. He said the scholarship is under the second year budget after the disbursement last year.
Each of the students will be given Rp2.5 million. This year some 6,000 autistic students will be the recipients.
In Makassar their number is not so significant, less than a thousand. The money is directly channeled by the South Sulawesi education agency directly to the school of autistic children.
In Makassar there are several schools for autistic children. With regard to the plan to build schools for autistic children, Muyiddin said directives are still expected from the central government.
But the plan and idea had already been given in a coordinating meeting in Jakarta some time ago. The plan is that the construction will be under the direct coordination of the South Sulawesi provincial administration.
In addition, the central government also planned to build a center for the development of education of autistic children in Jakarta, Semarang, Surabaya, Makassar, and Sumatra. Each of the locations will get Rp5 billion. According to the central government, most of the autistic children are in big cities.
