What Makes Ruhut That Controversial




Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - Ruhut Sitompul never seems away from controversies in issues he dared to comment since he has been a lawyer until he holds positions as a member of House of Representatives and chief of Democrat Party. Ruhut born on March 24, 1954, in Medan experienced a rocketing popularity since he starred "Poltak," an arrogant oil tycoon from Tarutung on Gerhana soap opera.

In a latest controversy, the Law Faculty of Padjajaran University alumna of 1979 presented the amendment of 1945 Constitution to allow the president to serve more than two terms. According to him, the idea was not the first time exposed after recent 65th anniversary of Indonesian Independence but since 6 months ago before the president at an internal Democrat session.

Ruhut admitted that SBY was against the idea by stating that the current term was the last before the next presidential election is held in 2014. Ruhut denied that the idea was a scenario set and claimed that it came from deep bottom of his heart. Spontaneously it provoked comments and responses from politicians and law experts, including Chief of Constitutional Court Mahmud MD, assessing that the idea could harm democracy.

This is not the first time Ruhut reaped controversies following his unique appearance and characteristic. On the Bank Century case, he committed to cut his ear if the alleged disbursement Bank Century bail out of Rp 6.7 trillion to Democrat and SBY could be proven. The second child of Humala Sitompul and Surtani Panggabean even stressed on Nov. 11, 2009, that the bail out had nothing to do with the president and the party.

Ruhut ever dared himself to have his throat slitted if the son of president, Ibas (Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono), could be proven of having accepted Rp 500 billion from Century. He also swore to have himself killed or stoned if Vice President Boediono and Sri Mulyani were willing to attend the probe held by Bank Century inquiry committee.

The fact was the then finance minister fulfilled the summons by the committee at House of Representatives building here on Nov.20, 2009. However, Ruhut is still alive up to now.
