Weather Warning for Indonesia Holiday Season

Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - Extreme weather during Indonesia’s dry season this year is likely to continue in the weeks ahead and may disrupt the forthcoming holiday season, a climatologist said Wednesday. The unseasonable downpours were being caused by high ocean-surface temperatures, which had unleashed the heaviest rainfalls in 12 years, said Soeroso Hadiyanto of the Meteorology, Geophysics and Climatology Agency.

“In August and September, there will be heavy rainfall with lightning, strong wind and high waves. Similar extreme weather also occurred in 1998, but this year’s rainfall is more intense compared with 12 years ago,” he said.

The weather will affect areas across the Indonesian archipelago, from Sumatra in the northwest to Papua in the east, he said. Indonesia’s President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono Tuesday warned travellers and transport operators of weather disruptions, with millions of people expected to return to their hometowns for September’s Eid-al-Fitr holiday.

“The weather is currently unfriendly, we need to advise people to be careful,” Yudhoyono said.

A passenger ferry sank in stormy weather off Flores island on Monday, killing 10 people. With more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia depends heavily on maritime services with fatal accidents common because of poor safety measures.
