Indonesia Not Yet Independent Economically

Banda Aceh, Indonesia (News Today) - Although Indonesia has been independent for 65 years, its people are not yet independent economically nor free from poverty, according to Aceh’s chief administrator.

"Yes we are no longer afraid of being colonized but our nation is not yet fully independent economically and not yet free from poverty," Aceh Governor Irwandi Yusuf said on the sidelines of an Independence Day ceremony here on Tuesday.

Therefore, he said, all parties must work hard, dilligently and willingly join hands to materialize full independence in the country. He said he was optimistic cooperative efforts to materialize welfare for the people would be successful.

"I also hope the government will also be more willing to materialize it and not prioritize symbolic things," he said.

The ceremony proceeded solemnly as it happened while most Indonesians who are Muslims were fasting. The ceremony was also attended by local officials including regional police chief Inspector General Fajar Prihantoro and regional military chief Major General Hambali Hanafiah.

Governor Irwandi also said Independence Day observance activities across Aceh were conducted smoothly and orderly.
