Indonesia Govt Yet to Decide Power Rate Hikes Next Year

Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - The government could not yet decide whether it would raise the basic electricity tariffs by 15 percent in 2011, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Darwin Saleh said. The minister said here on Tuesday that the government had only included the power rate increases as an assumption in the drafting of the 2011 Draft State Budget.

"No plan yet to raise the basic power rates (TDL). We have only set an assumption in the state budget for 2011," he said.

Moreover, an increase in the electricity tariff should gain approval from the House of Representatives (DPR), he said. He stated that it was impossible to draft the budget without including assumptions.

"The increase in the power rate by 15 percent is only an assumption. Of the assumptions in the state budget, plans would later be drawn up. But whether the TDL would really be raised still needs to be discussed with the DPR," he said.

Darwin said that the increase in TDL was only one the options of reducing electricity subsidy. Other options, he said, included reducing the cost for power production through among others reducing fuel oil consumption and replace it with coal.
