Govt to Assist All Indonesians on Trial in Malaysia

Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa said all Indonesians in trouble with the law in Malaysia would receive legal assistance through the Indonesian embassy there. The minister was commenting on a recent report that 345 Indonesian workers in Malaysia were now facing the death sentence for various crimes.

"As soon as the case of an Indonesian enters the legal domain, he or she will be provided with a lawyer by the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. So no Indonesian prisoner there will be left to fend for his or her own," said the minister here on Monday.

Marty said the 345 Indonesians in Malaysia were facing the death sentence for committing various crimes, but heir cases had nothing to do with politics. Therefore, the best assistance that could be given to them was legal support from lawyers.

He said, in the recent past there had been legal cases where the death sentences of Indonesians in Malaysia were commuted to prison terms thanks to legal assistance provided by the Indonesian embassy. Migrant Care Director Anis Hidayah said recently the number of Indonesians facing the death sentence in Malaysia was enormous.

"There aren’t that many Indonesians on death row in any other country. I find it strange that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and the government can remain calm given the huge number of our own people sitting in cells waiting to be killed," she said.

She added that the capital punishment handed down to the hundreds of Indonesians could have been avoided if the government had thoroughly assisted the Indonesians throughout the legal process.
