Denpasar Bali, Indonesia (News Today) - An Indonesian court sentenced eight Iranians to life in prison Tuesday for smuggling hundreds of methamphetamine tablets in their stomachs into the resort island of Bali.
“The accused were proven legally and convincingly guilty of smuggling narcotics in large numbers,” chief judge Djumain told the Denpasar district court.
Indonesia enforces stiff penalties, including life imprisonment and death, for drug trafficking. The sentences were stiffer than the 18-year terms sought by prosecutors as their “actions could destroy the nation’s youths”, judges said.
The Iranians are to appeal against the sentences. Iranian drugs syndicates have become the main suppliers of heroin and crystal methamphetamine to Indonesia, replacing West African countries, The Jakarta Post newspaper reported, quoting police.
Between October and May, police have detained more than 30 people allegedly linked to a dozen drug smuggling attempts planned by Iranian syndicates, it added.
