Indonesians Urged to Reject Terrorists' Persuasion

Semarang, Indonesia (News Today) - Central Java Police Chief Inspector General Alex Bambang Riatmodjo called on all Indonesian people to reject terrorists’ persuasion of joining their evil acts.

"Please consider a thousand times if certain parties persuaded you to do the acts of terror. Reject their persuasion," he said here Friday in response to Wednesday’s arrest of some terror suspects.

The National Police’s anti-terror squad, Detachment 88, raided a Central Java village on Wednesday, arresting key terror suspect Abdullah Sunata and two others, and killed a fourth suspect. Riatmodjo also urged people in Central Java to work closely with police in maintaining law and order in the province.

The acts of terrorism would only make the nation suffered because they did not only cause casualties but also badly affected the country’s security and stability, he said. Asked about the latest development of the arrests of Abdullah Sunata and some of his loyalists, he refused to comment on it.

"I cannot comment on it because it is not my authority," he said.

Indonesian Police Chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri confirmed that the police’s Special Detachment-88 anti-terror squad had arrested terror suspect Abdullah Sonata. Besides Abdullah Sonata, the anti-terror squad personnel also arrested two other suspected terrorists, Agus and Sogir, while one other suspect was shot to death.

One police officer of the Special Detachment-88 anti-terror squad was shot in the chest when the suspects were raided. Previously, the Densus-88 anti-terror team raided suspected terrorists in the Cungkrungan hamlet, Belang Wetan village, North Klaten sub-district, Klaten Regency, Central Java, on Wednesday night.

The suspected terrorist who was killed in the raid was Yuli Darsono. In response to the police’s success, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono hoped the police would continue improving their performance and achievement, Presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said.

The Indonesian police anti-terror squad personnel have intensified the hunt of armed terror suspects in Aceh, outskirts of Jakarta and Central Java since February. Aceh Governor Irwandi Yusuf said the terror suspects wanted to make his province their base of struggle in Southeast Asia.

On March 9, in Pamulang sub-district, Tangerang City, Banten Province, the police gunned down three terror suspects and arrested three others. The dead terror suspects were Dulmatin, Indonesia’s most wanted terrorist, and two of his body guards.

Dulmatin, who was confirmed by the Indonesian police responsible for the 2002 Bali bombings, was shot dead in a raid on an internet outlet in Pamulang. Indonesia has been fighting terrorist cells in the country since the 2002 Bali bombings that claimed 202 lives, including 88 Australian holiday makers.

Two years before the terrorists attacked the resort island of Bali, Indonesia was rocked by the Christmas eve bombings in 2000.
