Indonesia Won't Beg to US over Military Cooperation

Jakarta (News Today) - The Indonesian government said it will not beg to the United States for defense and military cooperation. Indonesia’s defense ministry and the Indonesian military (TNI), pointed out they will not be begging for the restoration of cooperation in special forces cooperation with the US.

The strong statement was made by Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro and TNI chief General Djoko Santoso flanked by the three chiefs of Staff, at a hearing with Commission I of the House of Representstives in Jakarta Monday.

"There is no urgency for a special forces (Kopassus) training. Actually the RI-US military cooperation has been going on since 2001 after the embargo was lifted, followed by the formation of a RI-US Security Dialogue, which had met eight times so far," Purnomo said.

Indonesia refused to sign a Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) with the US. Even if Kopassus did not wish for an exercise with the US, training could still be held with Australia, like yesterday in Perth, he said. In the meantime, General Djoko Santoso said military cooperation between the two countries had been more often after 2008.
