Indonesia Seeks 10 Years for Noordin's Driver

(News Today) - Indonesian prosecutors on Monday sought 10 years’ jail for the alleged driver of late terror leader Noordin Mohammad Top. Amir Abdillah, 34, is facing charges including plotting to assassinate the president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and concealing information about a terrorist group.

He was arrested in the wake of twin suicide bombings on luxury hotels in Jakarta last July which killed seven people, the last in a strong of deadly attacks blamed on Malaysian-born Noordin and his extremist network. Noordin was killed by police in a raid in September.

Abdillah “knew about the plot to bomb the hotels, he knew about the plan to kill President SBY, he hid information about terror suspects and assisted them,” prosecutor Chairul Fauzi told the South Jakarta district court. Prosecutors did not seek the maximum death sentence because the accused had confessed to his crimes, showed regret and was cooperative, he added.

Two Islamic extremists carrying backpacks filled with homemade bombs blew themselves up at the neighbouring JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels in downtown Jakarta on July 17. Prosecutors said Abdillah was in a car near the hotels with fellow-Islamist Syaifudin Jaelani as he issued the orders via mobile phone to the bombers to initiate their attacks.

Jaelani was killed by police in the wake of the bombings. They also said Abdillah drove Noordin to meetings with terrorists, booked a hotel room in West Java where the attacks were planned, and transported explosive materials to a house where a truck bomb was being assembled.

The truck bomb was intended for an attack on Yudhoyono around independence day on August 17 last year, but it never took place. Dressed in a grey shirt and white Muslim cap, Abdillah appeared calm throughout the hearing.

“I regret my past deeds,” he told reporters at the court. Noordin led a radical splinter faction of the Jemaah Islamiyah terror network which he called “Al-Qaeda in the Malay Archipelago.
