Katulampa water gate separated from flood prevention system: Minister

(News Terupdate) - Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto said Monday that Katulampa water gate in Bogor, West Java, was not a part of the flood prevention system in Jakarta, easing the public worry after the decades-old water gate was reportedly cracking after the Saturday's flood.

"The Katulampa water gate was initially built to support irrigation system in its nearby areas," he said.

"We then installed a device to watch its water level so that is is possible to predict in rainy season when flood would hit the lower areas like Jakarta."

"So, whether the water gate presents or not, the flood is still there."

On Friday night the city administration had warned residents of areas near rivers of the possibility of floods after water levels at the Katulampa water gate reached 250 centimeters earlier in the day, more than enough to ring initial warning bells.

As predicted, from early on Saturday water from the Ciliwung River began to inundate areas, including Rawa Jati and Pengadegan in South Jakarta, and Kampung Melayu and Jati Pinggir in East Jakarta.
