Indonesian Drivers Subject to Urine Test

Bekasi, Indonesia (News Today) - Hundreds of bus drivers in Bekasi, West Java, underwent urine tests here on Thursday for Idul Fitri holiday transportation safety. Bekasi city administration spokesman Supandi Budiman at the side lines of urine test at Bekasi bus terminal said the move was intended to reduce traffic accident during Idul Fitri exodus.

"In many cases, drunk and psychotropic drug possessed drivers are the main cause of traffic accident, and therefore the urine test is conducted to ensure travel security and safety," he said.

Supandi said the urine test for the bus drivers was conducted by Bekasi Narcotic Board in cooperation with West Java Narcotic Board and Bekasi transportation office. He said the bus drivers at Bekasi bus terminal were not told in advance that there would be a urine test.

"Through the test, the drivers who are discovered to have drugs will be banned from driving during the holiday exodus," Supandi said.

Meanwhile, Joko, a Bekasi-Semarang bound bus driver, said he did not question the urine test because according to him it was a rule for all drivers to be in good shape while driving.

"It is very dangerous for a public bus to be driven by a drunk and drug possessed driver. Such a driver will get angry and speed up his bus if another bus takes over or sounds the horn behind him," Joko said.

He admitted that he was not a drug users because he knew it was very dangerous for the passengers and the bus he drove. But he could not tell if any of other bus drivers used drugs. To drive his bus safely with good concentration, Joko said he tried to be in good shape by taking enough rest and consuming nutritious food.

"When I drive, I do it for at least eight hours and then ask my co-driver to replace me so that I can take a rest," Joko said, adding that he has been a bus driver for eight years without any accident whatsoever.
