2012 Mazda2 Breaks Cover ... Sort of

(News Today) - Mazda has given a teaser to the new Mazda2 hatchback, but don't expect it in dealerships anytime soon. Mazda has given a glimpse of its next generation 2 hatchback - as a foam scale model.

Taking the idea of a concept car to the extreme - or to its minimalist form - designers used a quarter-sized white model with projected images to talk of its new design direction and what was possible with future looks and materials.

The white model was on display at the brand's recent design forum in Europe, demonstrating how the new Kodo design theme (it translates to "soul of motion") could be applied to a compact hatchback.

Mazda unveiled its Shinari concept car to showcase the new design language but wanted to give an inkling as to how it could be adapted to a city sized car rather than a behemoth coupe that would never be sold.

"We wanted to show how it would look in a B-segment car," said Mazda's European design manager Peter Birtwhistle. "Shinari was a tool to present Maeda-san's (Mazda's global design boss) design language ... to send a strong message [about where we're heading with design]. This car [the hatchback model] is to show how it would work in a small car."

There's a long way from the initial concept and the showroom, though. The current shape Mazda2 only went on sale in 2007 before being updated a few months ago so is likely to be replaced around 2012, with the model giving a clue as to its future look.

The model shows a well proportioned hatch with sculptured doors that flow to the rear wheel arches. Squat and stylish, the Mazda2 model builds on its organic lines.
