Firm Measures against Anarchist Mass Organizations

Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - National Police Chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri stated the police would take firm measures against mass organizations engaged in anarchy.

"The police must not hesitate in firmly dealing with those who had committed violence toward others," said Bambang here on Tuesday during a joint meeting with members of the House of Representatives Commission II on Domestic Affairs, and Commission III on Law and Commission VIII on Religious Affairs.

Bambang stated that police action against anarchist organizations was important to maintain security and peace. He added the government and members of the House of Representatives would soon discuss a revision of Regulation no 8/1985 about mass organizations. Previously Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto during a joint meeting with lawmakers in South Jakarta on Monday made a proposal to amend Regulation no 8/1985 on mass organizations.

Djoko said it is important to revise the regulation because several public organizations had violated the basic principles of law and order. He said the government had suggested the House to revise Regulation no 8/1985 since 2000.

In 2008 mass organizations had committed eight violence, and last year the number had increased to 40. Up till August 2010, the number had reached 49.
