John Lennon Assassin Seeking Release on Parole

New York (News Today) - John Lennon’s assassin was expected to appear before a parole board as early as Tuesday to seek conditional release nearly 30 years after the former Beatles shocking slaying, a prison official said. Mark David Chapman, 55, is seeking release for the sixth time as part of a routine review of sentences at Attica prison in northern New York state, where he is an inmate.

“It will be today or tomorrow,” a parole board spokesman said. He said Chapman was among 40 to 60 inmates whose requests for parole will be heard by a two person panel.

The board’s decision will be announced the next day. “They will start today but it could take more than a day to get to the entire schedule of inmates,” the spokesman said.

Chapman shot Lennon to death outside his Manhattan apartment building on Central Park, an act that stunned the world and in the view of many historians marked the end of an era. Chapman was sentenced in 1981 to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 20 years in prison.

The widow of the former Beatles, Yoko Ono, has said on repeated occasions that she is opposed to Chapman’s release. His requests for parole have been rejected every two years since 2000. Ono’s lawyer, Peter Shukat, was quoted last month by the Daily News as saying her position hasn’t changed.
