Former Riau Islands Governor Sentenced to Two Years

Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - The Corruption Crime Court (Tipikor) here on Monday sentenced former Riau Islands governor Ismet Abdullah to two years in jail for corruption in the procurement of fire brigade trucks.

"The convict is legally and convincingly guilty of the crime and therefore sentenced to two years imprisonment and fined Rp100 million," Tipikor Presiding Judge Tjokorda Rae Suamba said when handing down the sentence on Monday.

Ismeth was found guilty in the direct appointment of PT Satal Nusantara owned by Hengky Samuel Daud for the procurement of fire trucks in the 2004-2005 period. Earlier Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK)’s Public Prosecutor Rudi Margono asked the judge to hand down a four year sentence and a fine of Rp200 million in lieu of six months in confinement.

The direct appointment took place during his time when he was chairman of the Batam Industrial Development Authority in Riau Islands. The direct appointment caused a loss to the state amounting to Rp5.4 billion. The losses came from the purchase of ME-5 Morita fire engines Rp7.9 billion in 2004 and Rp11.9 billion in 2005.
