Jakarta (News Today) - Indonesian will continue to urge the United Nations (UN) to take the strongest possible action against Israel over the Monday’s storming of Gaza-bound aid ships. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at a press conference at his office here on Wednesday said Indonesia would also continue to garner international support to press Israel to halt the construction of new settlement area and its military aggression of any kind that even worsen the prospect of peace effort in the Middle East region.
"We will encourage other countries to press Israel halt all of its military assaults and return to negotiating table and grant independence to Palestine. That is the diplomacy which we will continue to make at international level," President Yudhoyono said.
President Yudhoyono said at a meeting with his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas here last week that Indonesia was ready to play its active role in the negotiations about Palestinian independence. If the peace negotiations yielded a prospect of Palestinian independence, President Yudhoyno said his country would also be ready to send its peace-keeping contingent under the UN auspices to ensure the peace in Palestine.
"Indonesia does not merely make a statement about the freedom of its volunteers but also wants to have Middle East conflict settled and the freedom for Palestinian people," President Yudhoyono said.
In his press statement, President Yudhoyono also called on other world’s leaders including UN chief to seriously manage the problem in Palestine.
"Indonesia is also of the opinion that the world peace and security are influenced by political situation and security in the Middle East, especially in Palestine," President Yudhoyono said.
Meanwhile, AFP reported on Tuesday that UN chief Ban Ki-moon was "shocked by the naval assault on a convoy carrying hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists through international waters. As tens of thousands of people protested across the world, Ban called on Israel to "urgently" explain itself over the raid reported to have killed at least 19 innocent people.
