Banda Aceh, Indonesia (News Today) - Gunmen shot dead a Norwegian national of Indonesian origin on Monday as he visited his hometown in Aceh province, police said.
The 45-year-old man identified as Hanafiah Ahmad has lived in Norway for the last 12 years. He was granted asylum in the country when he fled a three-decade separatist war on the northern tip of Indonesia’s Sumatra island.
“Ahmad was with his friends at a food stall when he was shot by gunmen who were travelling in a minivan,” a local police detective chief Erlin Tang Jaya told AFP.
Police are investigating the motive, he said. Aceh has experienced sporadic low-level violence, including armed robberies and politically motivated grenade and gun attacks, despite the 2005 end of a separatist war that claimed around 15,000 lives.
