Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - United States President Barack Obama’s Indonesian trip remains uncertain after being postponed twice. Presidential spokesman for foreign affairs Teuku Fauziasyah at the presidential palace here on Tuesday said Indonesia was still expecting a visit by Obama although a specific date for it still had to be fixed.
"Obama’s Indonesian trip is still scheduled but the specific date of the visit will be adjusted to the presidential agenda," Teuku said, adding that he was unable to say if the US president would make the visit in November 2010.
Teuku said Obama’s planned visit to Indonesia was not mentioned by US Ambassador to Indonesia Scot Alan Marciel when he met with President Yudhoyono to present his credentials at the state palace on Tuesday. On the occasion Scot only said President Obama’s close affinity with Indonesia was an added value in the two countries relations.
President Obama had twice canceled his much-awaited trip to Indonesia, namely in March 2010 and in June the same year. He had intended to visit Indonesia as part of his science-based diplomacy towards the Muslim world.
Indonesia and the US were to sign a comprehensive agreement on June 14, 2010 during Obama’s visit, which was expected to provide for fresh funds for science and technology collaboration. The postponements of Obama’s Indonesia visit were due his pressing duties in dealing with domestic issues.
The Obama administration had spent months preparing for expanded cooperation in science and technology with Indonesia. Indonesia was visited by a succession of missions from the White House, the State Department and the Department of Commerce.
And US energy executives accompanied US officials in May, to promote the purchase of renewable energy technologies. Indonesia hopes to increase its clean energy production from seven percent to 15 percent by 2025, and Obama’s National Export Initiative aims to double US exports to Indonesia in five years.
