Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - Indonesian police have raised their alertness across the country following an attack on a police station in North Sumatra by an armed gang early on Wednesday.
"The National Police chief through his operations deputy has ordered all sector, resort and regional police commands across Indonesia to increase their alertness and readiness through preventive and repressive measures," the National Police’s head of public relations division, Inspector General Iskandar Hasan said here on Wednesday.
Three police officers were killed while on duty at around 00.30 hours on Wednesday at the Hamparan Perak police station in North Sumatra following an attack by an armed gang. Iskandar said the police had already identified the guns used in the attack.
"We already know the types of guns used by the attackers of the Hamparan Perak police station based upon 20 casings found at the scene. The guns are believed to be AK47s,M-16s and SS1s," he said.
The attack followed recent police raids also in North Sumatra that left three suspects involved in a bank robbery in Medan last August killed and 15 others arrested.
The national police chief, General Bambang Hendarso Danuri, said these people were linked to a terrorist cell of 33 members. The police on Tuesday arrested another suspect.
The police are still chasing 15 other suspects. Bambang Hendarso said these people had robbed the bank to collect money to finance terrorism.
