(News Today) - When you crash your car it's your responsibility to call a tow truck to have your wreck removed. But what happens if you crash a 55,000 tonne ocean freighter?
Those with long memories will remember the story of the MV Tricolor, a Norwegian carrier that sank in the English Channel in 2002. It was filled with 2871 Volvos, Saabs and BMWs that looked bound for a watery grave.
That was until this week, when we discovered the story of the MV Tricolor's salvage. It turns out the ship sank in only 30 metres of water. But calling a tow truck wasn't an option. Instead, a team of experts used high-strength steel cabling to cut the Tricolor into pieces.
Each section, with cars still on board, was then lifted out of the water and taken to a scrap yard. The cost of the lost cars and the operation was more than $100 million.
