PPP to Keep Parliamentary Threshold at 2.5 Percent

Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - The chief of the Islam-based United Development Party (PPP), Suryadharma Ali, said the party would fight to keep the parliamentary threshold to remain at 2.5 percent.

"PPP will talk with other parties to build common perception and view on the issue," he said on the sidelines of the commemoration of Prophet Muhammad’s miraculous flight from Mecca to Jerusalem and the death of PPP founder KH Idham Chalid seven days ago at the PPP headquarters here on Saturday.

He said the 2.5 threshold could eradicate 18 million votes. "So if it is raised to five percent the number of potential votes to vanish is 36 millions. This is lamentable," he said.

In view of that he said the idea to raise the threshold would be inapropriate because a lot of votes could vanish because of that. Regarding the idea of confederation voiced by the National Mandate Party (PAN) to reduce the number of political parties, Suryadharma said he though fusion would be better than that because it would last longer and is more strategic.

He said confederation is not the only way of joining parties as there is also fusion like the one that happened at the early establishment of PPP. "As regards the fusion PPP is already experienced. PPP has ever done it," he said.

PPP secretary general Irgan Chairul Mahfiz meanwhile said confederation would be prone to internal conflicts between confederation members and therefore PPP does not agree with it. He said the idea would be difficult to realize while no law for it is not yet available. He said unifying vision and mission would also be difficult to achieve.

"It is not easy to unify the perception of one party with that of another. Moreover that party’s ideology is different from ours," he said.

He said confederation would face problems when members wish to nominate a person to become a president.

"They will fight to find one of them to become a presidential candidate in the election later," he said.
