Indonesian Workers' Wages in Malaysia to be Reviewed

Kuching, Malaysia (News Today) - Indonesian workers’ daily wages in the timber industry will be reviewed in tandem with the industry’s current growth, says the Sarawak Timber Association.

Based on an agreement reached on March 31 with the Indonesian Acting Consul-General here, Rafail Walingitan, an independent study was being conducted by a renowned university on the wages paid to Indonesian workers in the east Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, and Peninsular Malaysia.

The six-month study started on July 1 and would conclude on Dec 31, the association said in a statement Thursday.

The study findings would provide a valid reference to both parties to work out fair and equitable wages for Indonesian workers, it said. In the meantime, association members had decided to pay RM12 (US$3.75) a day to Indonesian general workers from July 1 until completion of the study, it added.
