Indonesia Govt to Launch Market Operations Soon

Banjarnegara, Indonesia (News Today) - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Hatta Radjasa said the government will soon launch market operations to stabilize prices.

"We have ordered market operations. The market operations have been changed so we do not need to await a price difference of up to 10 percent to launch them," he said on Sunday.

But if the prices showed an upward trend the National Logistics Board (Bulog) would be authorized to launch market operations soon, he said. He stated a number of regions had launched market operations following a significant increase in the prices of several commodities in recent months.

"In the past, market operations were launched at the request of district heads or governors but now they aren’t," he said.

The prices of rice had returned to normal thanks to the government’s efforts to stabilize its prices, he said.

"It is difficult to stabilize the prices of red chili due to the changing climate. During the dry season we have a lot of rains so red chili production is disturbed," he said.

He said the government also tried to prevent speculators from capitalizing on the current conditions. In this respect, the trade minister had held dialogs with large traders, he said.
