Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - The government predicts it will need an estimated Rp3 trillion in funds to host the 26th SEA Games next year.
"The budget allocations next year for the event will be Rp1.1 trillion while the fund needs will be Rp3 trillion. So, we still need another Rp2 trillion. We are still trying to get the budget allocations raised," Deputy Minister for National Development Planning Lukita Dinarsyah Tuwo said on Wednesday.
The budget allocations for the SEA Games would be mostly used to improve sports facilities to meet international standards, he said. According to him, the Rp3 trillion in funds would also be used to nurture the athletes of the country’s main sport branches so that Indonesia could improve its rank in the biennial event.
"In the past few years Indonesia’s achievement (in the SEA Games) has fallen short of expectation. As a host, we must have better achievement. Indonesia has set itself the target of at least finishing in the third place (in the medal tally). But if we can emerge as an overall champion this will be better," he said.
He said the government was expected to hold talks with the House of Representatives (DPR) in October to budget allocations for the SEA Games.
