It Takes Rp15.2 Billion to Build Temporary Houses in Mentawai




Padang, Indonesia (News Today) - The construction of temporary houses for tsunami victims in Mentawai Islands regency, West Sumatra, needs Rp 15.2 billion, head of National Disaster Management Agency Syamsul Ma’arif said Friday. He said the money raised for the building of such temporary houses had reached Rp12.58 billion.

"The remaining Rp3 billion will be provided by the agency," he said. The Indonesian Red Cross will build 516 temporary homes in Pagai Selatan, Mentawai Islands regency," he said.

He said the emergency response period for overcoming the tsunami disaster in Mentawai Islands regency had been extended after lifted on November 22, 2010.

"The emergency response period is necessary for the distribution of relief aid. Right now it is difficult for the Mentawai regency administration to provide a budget, because the 2011 regional budget has not been set," he said.

"Up till now, the people of Mentawai is still unable to revive the economy because they are still traumatized, while they need means of transportation and foodstuff," Syamsul Ma’arif said.

He also said that the building of the temporary homes in Mentawai Islands regency would not be completed for Christmas. "Right now trees are being cut with the help of the local people following a permit issued by the Forestry Ministry," he said.

On a different occasion, head of the house construction agency Dodi Ruswandi said 200 of the 728 houses had been completed for the tsunami victims in Mentawai Islands regency. Seventy seven had been built in Padang, and sent to Mentawai.

"The building materials for the temporary houses came from Padang," he said.
