Seven Indonesians Named Best Workers in Taiwan

Taipei (News Today) - Seven Indonesian domestic helpers have bested their 500 countrywomen contenders for free family reunion with their husbands under the sponsorship of leading companies in Taiwan on Saturday.

Actually the selecting committe had named eight people as winners but one qualified nominee could not be contacted until the last-ditch attempt leaving the number of winners to seven, Chief of the Indonesian Economic and Trade Office (KDEI) to Taipei Harmen Sembiring said on the sidelines of the family reunion at a five-star Sheraton Taipei Hotel on Saturday.

"Only one could not be contacted so we decided the number of winners is seven," he said.

The selecting team consisted of officials from the KDEI, Radio Taiwan International (RTI), Taiwanese Council Labor Affairs (CLA). He said soon after the winners had been named the KDEI contacted the Indonesian Manpower and Transmigration Ministry to assist their husbands or other relatives in arranging their travel documents.

The ministry later assigned two of its employees to arrange the travel documents and accompany them during their travel to Taiwan. The family reunion was the second held since 2007 when eight Indonesian domestic helpers were named winners for such an event.

The seven domestic helpers were Siti Mayangsari of Indramayu, Endang Herawati of Majalengka, Muryati of Kediri, Fitri Dwianti of Tasikmalaya, Sundari of Bayuwangi, Linda Aprilyanti of Blitar and Masyrikin of Malang. To date, more than 151,000 Indonesian migrant workers are employed in Taiwan, accounting for almost 40 percent of the overall such workers in the territory.

Herman said the Indonesian workers particularly those named winners for the family reunion had left their relatives merely for their jobs and therefore, their Taiwanese employers must treat them according to their rights.

"Please treat them properly because they have totally dedicated themselves to the jobs," he said.

Muryati said she did not think she would be named one of the winners. "It seemed unbelievable. I had difficult sleep for a few days as I wanted to meet (my husband) soon," the 39-year-old mother of three children said.

As a domestic helper, Muryati looked after her employer’s ailing 90-year-old mother. Her employer nominated her as one of the winners for excellent job in which she always provided accurate information needed by the doctor treating her employer’s mother.

"The most important thing is to work first and my employer will eventually understand me," she said.

The sponsors included Chinatrust Bank, China Airlines, Welldone Company, Huanan Commercial Bank, EEC Index Group, Jaya Nusantara Express, and Intai Magazine.
