Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the government actively protected Indonesian workers in Malaysia, particularly those who were facing legal problems.
"With regard to legal problems, the government is active in providing advocacy so that they would obtain justice," the president said in his official address at the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI)’s headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta, on Wednesday.
He said that the governments of Indonesia and Malaysia had reached an agreement on a number of rights of workers such as salary standard, right to enjoy holidays and a number of other rights.
"We know that there are about two million Indonesians are working there. Besides mutual benefits, there are also cases in the fields that we need to manage. We have been fighting for their rights to basic salaries, holidays and schooling for their children," he said.
Both countries officially reached the agreement when Yudhoyono visited Malaysia recently. Indonesia and Malaysia’s relations in the past several weeks are colored with rallies and demonstrations which were triggered by the arrest of three Indonesian maritime patrol officers by Malaysian police in the Indonesian water areas recently.
