Seoul, South Korea (News Today) - South Korean President Lee Myung-bak nominated the head of the state audit agency to be his new prime minister, the Yonhap news agency reported Thursday.
The nomination comes weeks after his previous nominee pulled out of the running amid corruption allegations that surfaced during his confirmation hearing.
Former Prime Minister Chung Un-chan resigned in July.
The new candidate is Kim Hwang-sik, and Lee said his high morals and integrity make him suitable for the job, Yonhap reported. He has spent three decades in the law community and helped advance South Korea's legal system, Yonhap said.
The resignation of the previous nominee was a blow to Lee's cabinet reorganization efforts, which had been an attempt to refresh the government for the second half of his term.
Chung, the former prime minister, resigned in late July after he failed to win parliamentary approval to stop relocation of government offices out of the capital, Seoul. The failure was a major setback to Lee's government and a sign that his party is losing clout.
