JK: Why Indonesia Still Weak

Malang, Indonesia (News Today) - Former vice president Jusuf Kalla said Indonesia is still weak because its economy is not as yet able to provide equal welfare widely to the people.

"The needs in various sectors have been fulfilled and served well such as in the health, education and political fields but our economy remains weak which is our country’s weak point," he said when speaking at Muhammadiyah University here on Saturday.

He said the situation happened because a lot of the country’s Muslims did not master economic skills. As a result he said the country’s economy remained controlled by non-Muslims or ethnic Chinese in particular.

He said the Indonesian people in general have so far been interested only in becoming civil servants or other professions that businessmen. Therefore Indonesian Muslims have to start to rise and exploit their economic potentials. He said business was like swimming namely one to learn it in order to be capable.

"Unless we practice it we will never be able to become one," he said.

He said Prophet Muhammad also used to be a trader and Islam had also entered the country through traders so why the foundation was not further developed or institutionalized to make the country self-sufficient. Sharing Kalla’s view, Muhammadiyah senior figure Prof Malik Fajar said moving the economy requires a will.

"It is indeed difficult to find a will and start a business. However just making a start is a valuable capital needed to build a strong foundation for economic development that will eventually bring welfare to many people," he said.
