Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - An Indonesian court has ordered the country’s attorney general to step down immediately, saying his term officially expired nearly a year ago. Hendarman Supandji assumed the post in 2007, in the middle of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s first five-year term.
The Constitutional Court was asked to review the legality of Supandji’s position by a former human rights minister who was named a suspect in a corruption case. It ruled Wednesday that Supandji — as a Cabinet member — should have been reappointed or replaced in October 2009 at the start of Yudhoyono’s second term.
The president did not name a new attorney general in his new Cabinet. Court chairman Mohammad Mahfud said Supandji should be replaced immediately by his deputy.
