Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - Indonesia will order six more Sukhoi jet fighter planes to form a complete squadron of the Russian-built aircraft, Air Force Chief of Staff Marshal Imam Sufaat said here Friday. The plan to buy the additional Sukhois already had President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s approval, he said.
Ten Sukhoi aircraft the Air Force had already obtained and were now based at its Hasanuddin base in Makassar were not enough to provide maximum protection for Indonesia’s air, sea and land territory, he said. Malaysia had 18 Sukhoi fighter planes, and Singapore had 24 F-15 jet fighters , yet their territories were much smaller than Indonesia’s , Imam said.
Therefore, the Air Force planned to procure six more Sukhoi aircraft , he said. In 2003, Indonesia acquired four Sukhois comprising two SU-30MKs and two SU-27SKs from Russia, and in 2007, six more at a total price of 300 million US dollars.
Later, Indonesia again bought six Sukhois consisting of three SU-30MKs and three SU-27SKMs. The three SU-30MK2s were delivered in December 2008 and January 2009, the three SU-27SKMs on Friday (Sept 10) and on Thursday (Sept 16). The Indonesian Air Force had also sent its own personnel to Russia and China to learn how to fly and maintain the Sukhois.
