Sukabumi, Indonesia (News Today) - Bus drivers and crew are obliged to under urine tests by the Sukabumi health service during the Idul Fitri Islamic holiday exodus.
The urine tests are necessary to ensure safety for hundreds of travelers using public buses at the Sukabumi terminal daily, dr Wahyu Handrianan, emergency handling coordinator of the Sukabumi health service, said here Tuesday.
"The from the results of urine tests, we could judge whether the drivers are fit to drive or not," he said.
The urine tests could detect illicit drugs consumed by the drivers, he said.
"The device is able to detect chemical substances inside the body. Even if a driver took illicit drug a week ago, it will still be detected," he said.
Exhausted drivers or those detected of having consumed illicit drugs are not allowed to drive in order to prevent possible traffic accidents. In Bekasi, also West Java Province, hundreds of bus drivers underwent urine tests last Thursday, for Idul Fitri holiday transportation safety.
Bekasi city administration spokesman Supandi Budiman at the side lines of urine test at Bekasi bus terminal said the move was intended to reduce traffic accident during Idul Fitri exodus.
"In many cases, drunk and psychotropic drug possessed drivers are the main cause of traffic accident, and therefore the urine test is conducted to ensure travel security and safety," he said.
Supandi said the urine test for the bus drivers was conducted by Bekasi Narcotic Board in cooperation with West Java Narcotic Board and Bekasi transportation office.
