2 Indonesian Police Go on Trial on Terror Charges

Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - Two Indonesian policemen and a civilian went on trial Thursday on charges of conspiring with terrorists who were plotting attacks on foreigners and Western embassies in the country. The police are accused of selling firearms, including AK-47s, M-16s and revolvers, to suspected terrorists to be used at a newly discovered terrorist training camp in Aceh.

The civilian is accused of acting as mediator between the policemen and the buyer, a police deserter who was involved in training at the camp. The defendants and Tsauri are among more than 100 more suspects detained or killed after the discovery of the camp in Aceh in February.

The trials of 21 others accused of plotting attacks on aid workers after the tsunami opened last week at another court in the Indonesian capital. Prosecutor Natsir, who uses a single name, said the two policemen had taken the arms from a police warehouse where they were working. If found guilty, they could be sentenced to death.
