What SBY Can Do about Interfaith Violence

Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on the police to take effective steps to prevent the possible occurrence of interfaith violence.

"If they see signs of violence, the police should take steps soon to prevent it from materializing," the president said at a cabinet meeting at the State Secretariat here on Tuesday.

The president said he hoped all law enforcing agancies would coordinate with each other so that all problem could be prevented and overcome. He said it would not be good if in the runup to the celebration of national independence (on August 17) things happened that could threaten the nation’s interfaith harmony.

"If we are sensitive and responsive to the seeds of misunderstanding, officials (from top to bottom) who are in the forefront in society should be able to know potential conflicts," Yudhoyno said.

Therefore, the head of state called on the relevant ministers and regional officials to pay special attention to the matter.

"I received a report that certain quarters were trying to provoke clashes. If such clashes happen, it will really be extraordinary. I hope you will really be sensitive and responsive to the possible occurrence of clashes in our community," he said.
