Pangkal Pinang, Indonesia (News Today) - The Bangka Belitung Provincial Police are launching so-called "public disease" operations ahead of the fasting month of Ramadhan. "The operations are launched to anticipate security and public order disturbances during the fasting month," Bangka Belitung Provincial Police chief Brig. Gen. M Rum Murkal said here on Sunday.
The operations targeted liquor circulation, gambling, and prostitution, among others, he said. The activity was part of integrated operations conducted simultaneously in all parts of the provincial police’s jurisdiction.
"The operations are part of efforts to minimize security and public order disturbances before and during the fasting month," he said. Asked about the operating hours of cafes and nightspots in the province during the fasting month, he said it was the authority of the provincial government to govern them.
"We are waiting for a policy from the regional government about the operating hours of nightspots and cafes. It is likely the police will coordinate with public order officers to supervise their operating hours," he said.
He asked the local people to refrain from doing anything that might disrupt public order during the fasting month. The fasting month this year is expected to start on August 11.
