Malaysia's Claim over Diplomatic Relations with Indonesia

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (News Today) - Malaysian and Indonesia diplomatic relations are not affected over a series of protests against Malaysia, including the throwing of human faeces at the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

"However, we cannot close one eye. The relations could be affected if incidents that could cause tension between the two countries continue unabated without any action.

"This is because what happened can inflame anger among the people. Thus, such incidents call for solutions and wisdom by both countries to diffuse the situation," he told reporters after the breaking of fast hosted by the General Operation Force in Cheras here Wednesday.

He said the cordial relations should be capitalised to defuse tension as a result of unwarranted protests and address the security issue at the sea border between both countries.

On Monday, members of the People's Democratic Defence Group (Bendera) demonstrators stomped on the Malaysian flag and smeared it with human faeces, and also threw the faeces at the Malaysian Embassy.

The demonstration was in protest against Malaysia over the arrest of three Indonesian fisheries officials, who have since been released. Bendera also held a brief peaceful protest outside the embassy on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zahid Hamidi has urged the people not to react the same way against Bendera's actions.

"Let Indonesian police and army handle the situation to ensure that harmonious relations between both countries prevail," he told reporters after he broke the fast with members of the army at the Sungai Besi Camp Wednesday.

He said the issue could be resolve through diplomatic relations and not true uncalled for actions by a small group of people.
