Indonesia Police News to be Boycotted




Jayapura, Indonesia (News Today) - Scores of journalists in Jayapura agreed to boycott news in relation to the Papua police, so that the relevant security authorities reveal the perpetrators behind the death of a Merauke journalist, Ardiansyah.

"So long as Ardi’s death is still a mystery, we will never handle the news from the Papua regional police, even when invited," Cunding Levi, secretary of the Jayapura’s Independence Journalists Association (AJI) said in Jayapura Monday.

The boycott will be launched by scores of journalists of media in Papua, including those of the Cenderawasih Post, Bintang Papua, Pasific Post, and Business Papua, JUBI Tabloid, and Boda Post, as well as two local TV stations..

"We will never cover news from the police until the death of our collague had become clear," shouted scores of journalists in action in front of the regional police station.

The police of Papua, he pointed out, actually can provide a writen and official guarantee for the security of members of the press in Papua.

"If the periods in point 1 and 2 are still not met, we will launch a Class Action to the Papua regional police for their lack of professionality," he said.

Editor-in-chief of Cenderawasih Post Lucky Ireuw pointed out that the press is one of the most important pillars of democratic development and promotion, but if it is constantly being silenced, democracy will be dead eventually.

The journalists and other national media contributors also taking part in the boycott action include Kompas, SCTV, ANTV, TEMPO, TV ONE, RCTI, METRO TV, Sinar Harapan, and Suara Pembaruan.

Another case also a journalist was killed in communinal chashes recently. SUN-TV journalist Ridwan Salamun was killed last Saturday while covering communical clashes between villagers from Banda Ely and Fiditan in Tual, Maluku. Ridwan suffered fatal injuries from a spear wound and a cut to his head.
