Indonesia Joins Countries Considering Bans On BlackBerrys

(News Today) - Indonesia's government said Wednesday that it may follow the lead of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in banning BlackBerry services, adding to pressure on device maker Research in Motion Ltd. (RIMM) to give governments greater access to data, the Associated Press reports.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Communication and Information said his country wants the Canadian company to set up a server locally so encrypted information sent by the smartphones won't have to be routed through RIM's overseas computers.

The announcement came hours after Saudi Arabia said its telecoms regulator had ordered mobile operators across the kingdom to halt BlackBerry services as of Friday.

The U.A.E. also plans to shut down email, messaging and Web browsing on BlackBerrys starting in October. India is in talks with RIM over how information is managed on the devices.
