Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - The Indonesian government has expressed concern over the Pakistan floods that have killed thousands, and intends to send humanitarian assistance to help alleviate the victims’ sufferings.
"President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has expressed his concern over the floods that have killed thousands," Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare Agung Laksono said here on Wednesday.
Agung said that the president had instructed the sending of humanitarian assistance to Pakistan in order to help mitigate the suffering of the victims. The assistance will be dispatched by the office of the coordinating minister for people’s welfare in cooperation with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).
"Indonesia will send a 20 member health team and logistic packages," the minister said.
The logistics packages included 4,000 blankets, 500 food packages, three tons of medicines and five tons of milk.
"The total value of the assistance is about US$1.3 million," the minister said.
Besides, the Indonesian government has also sent a four member advance team which would monitor the floods and victims conditions in the locations.
"The advance team will report the extent of the natural disaster’s conditions in the location so that we would be able to predict the kinds and volumes of our assistance," Agung said.
He said that Pakistan so far had good relations with Indonesia and had high care towards Indonesia when Indonesia was affected by a devastating tsunami.
"Therefore, the humanitarian assistance will be sent as a token of Indonesia’s attention to our brothers in Pakistan," the chief welfare minister said.
The flood catastrophe, which started almost a week ago and has killed more than 1,400 people, is likely to deepen as more rains are expected. A feared breakout of water-borne diseases such as cholera would create a health crisis. Parts of northwest Pakistan inundated by the worst floods in 80 years face life-threatening food shortages.
