(News Today) - Indonesian Democracy Party-Struggle (PDIP) leader Megawati Soekarnoputri called on her party’s cadres to take a common stand against corruption.
"Let us fight corruption. Are you ready," Megawati said when addressing around 4,000 party cadres attending a PDIP national conference in Sentul, West Java, drawing a yes reply from them all.
She said the PDIP supported efforts that had so far been made to fight corruption in the government or in the party. The party would continue to promote policies to rid regional administrations of corruption and also observe stricter discipline to prevent corruption within the party.
The participants of the two-day meeting include party executive board members, party members in the House of Representatives and party-affiliated government officials. The meeting had produced some decisions and recommendations. Regarding the general elections law, the party emphasized the need to revise the law to develop a simple multi-party system through ways that are democratic.
PDIP has proposed a five percent electoral threshold to limit the number of political parties that can participate in general elections. The party at the meeting also emphasized the need to fight for political parties’ involvement in the General Elections Commission (KPU) in view of violations of KPU independence by KPU members in the 2004 and 2009 general elections.
The parties’ involvement in the KPU would create a mechanism of control against each other to avoid possible electoral fraud.
