Many Residents Switch to 12-Kg Gas Cylinders

Bandar Lampung, Indonesia (News Today) - Some residents in Lampung province have switched to 12-kg gas cylinders following a spate of 3-kg gas cylinder explosions in many parts of the country.

"Since many gas cylinder blasts occurred in the country, I have stopped using gas in 3-kg cylinder and switched to gas in 12-kg cylinder I have once kept," Hartini, a housewife in Labuhanratu area in the provincial capital Bandarlampung, said on Sunday. She said she bought the 3-kg gas cylinder at Rp135 thousand.

"Actually, I did not receive free 3-kg gas cylinder from the government although I had been registered as one of the recipients," she said.

She said when she used a 3-kg gas cylinder she could save Rp25 thousand per month. Another housewife Chandra who lived in Tanjungkarang Pusat said she switched to 12-kg gas cylinder after she had used 3-kg gas cylinder for a long time.

"Admittedly, we received 3-kg gas cylinder for free. And all residents of Tanjungkarang Pusat received them, irrespective of their economic status," she said.

Meanwhile, Eko Sukoco, food seller, said he had stopped using a 3-kg gas cylinder since he heard many gas explosions in several parts of the country.

"I bought it (3-kg gas cylinder) for selling food. But since I heard many gas explosions I have switched to a 12-kg gas cylinder," he said.

Under the kerosene-to-gas conversion policy introduced in mid 2007, the government provided the poor with 3 kg-gas canisters plus stoves free of charge. The move is aimed at slashing kerosene subsidy in the state budget. The number of 3-kg cylinders distributed so far had reached about 60 million units.

However, substandard gas cylinders have caused fatalities among their users. Up to June 2010, a total of 33 blasts were recorded with 8 people killed and 44 others injured.
