Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) will on Tuesday commemorate the July 27, 1996 attack on the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) headquarters on Jl. Diponegoro 58 here.
The commemoration of the July 27 tragedy would be held on the scene of the attack on Jl. Diponegoro 58 here starting 11 a.m. on Tuesday, chief of the PDIP executive board for health and manpower dr Ribka Tjiptaning said in a press statement issued on Monday.
"The tragedy is 14 years old now. But up till now the case remains unsolved. In this connection, the PDIP executive board has instructed me to deliver oration and speech in the commemoration of the July 27 tragedy held by the Communication Forum for Victims 124," she said.
Ribka said when the July 27 attack occurred she was a member of the PDI regional executive board in Tangerang, Banten province. She was one of the people who fell victim to the tragedy. She was abducted by BIA and later detained at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police for a few days.
The results of investigation conducted by the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) suggested that five people were killed, 149 injured and 136 others detained following the attack.
Many believed the death toll might be more than five. A total of 124 members and sympathizers of Megawati-led PDI were sentenced to an average of one year in jail.
