(News Today) - Former vice president Jusuf Kalla met Philippine President Gloria M Arroyo in Manila, the Philippines, on Friday to discuss solutions to the conflict in Mindanao, southern Philippines. Jusuf Kalla was in Manila to meet an invitation to speak at an International Conference on Negotiators for the settlement of the conflict in the southern Philippines.
On the occasion, Kalla shared his experience in settling the conflicts in Aceh province, Poso (Central Sulawesi) and Ambon (Maluku) in Indonesia. These conflicts were successfully settled through the Helsinki and Malino peace negotiations.
The conference was also attended by negotiator for Palestine Prof. Omar Dajani, negotiator for Sudan Nuruledin Sati, negotiator for Northern Ireland Gerry Kelly and David Gorman from the Humanitaria Dialog Center.
Indonesia is one of the ASEAN member countries asked by both sides, the Philippine government and the MILF, to mediate the conflict in the southern Philippines.
