SBY to Name Sri Mulyani's Replacement

Jakarta, Indonesia (News Today) - Indonesia’s President said on Wednesday he will announce the new finance minister tonight, an appointment that will be seen by Indonesians and foreign investors as a test of his commitment to reform. The new finance minister will take over from Sri Mulyani
Indrawati, who is leaving to join the World Bank as a managing director on June 1.

Anny Ratnawati, the finance ministry’s Director General of Budgeting, and Armida Alisjahbana, State Minister for Development Planning, are considered strong candidates for the post, partly because President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is expected to favour maintaining the female “quota” in his male-dominated cabinet.

“I will announce it tonight,” Yudhoyono said when questioned by reporters at Jakarta’s Halim Perdanakusuma airport, where he arrived after an official visit to Singapore and Malaysia.

Julian Pasha, the president’s spokesman, said the announcement would be made at about 8 p.m. Jakarta time (1300 GMT) at Yudhoyono’s residence in Cikeas, Bogor. Indrawati quit earlier this month after a bruising battle with lawmakers opposed to her reform drive and tough stance on corruption.
