Indonesia Hosts Int'l Oil Palm Conference

Medan, Indonesia (News Today) - Indonesia will hold an International Oil Palm Conference (IOPC) from June 1-3, 2010 in Yogyakarta with focus on research and technology development to meet campaign against the commodity, research director said.

"Research must be intensified and developed in order to gather ammunition to answer the black campaigns (against oil palm)," Witjaksana Darmosarkoro, the director of the Palmoil Research Center (PPKS), said here on Monday.

Until now Indonesia is still facing difficulties meeting those spreading negative rumors about palmoil because it does not have accurate data especially environment-linked data, he said. He said Indonesia had often been considered neglecting the environment by burning forests to clear land for oilpalm plantations and developing oilpalm plantations on peat land.

"The negative stories have obviously hurt the national palmoil industry and oil palm plantations," he said.

He said issues relating to research and technology would be discussed at the conference including technology for sustainable palmoil developement.

"The progress in research and techology in North Sumatra, Indonesia and in Malaysia as well as palmoil industry development in Africa and South America would also be discussed in the meeting to be attended by 500 participants from home and abroad," he said.

The secretary of the North Sumatra Chapter of the Association of Indonesian Palmoil Producers (GAPKI), Timbas Tarigan, hailed the conference saying he hoped it could give inputs to support development of palmoil industry in the country.
