Jakarta governor must apologize over bloody Koja clash: MPR speaker

(News Terupdate) - People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) speaker Taufik Kiemas says that Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo must take full responsibility over the chaotic eviction of a tomb in Koja, North Jakarta.

"I believe the governor must apologize to the victims," Taufik told reporters at the House of Representatives in Jakarta on Thursday.

Taufik said that the eviction clash, which has taken two lives as of now, could have been prevented had the public order authorities taken a dialog approach rather than a violent one.

The eviction was on a cemetery, which is believed to be the resting place of Habib Hasan bin Muhammad al Haddad, also known locally as Mbah Priok, a religious leader who was born in 1727.

The local administration says that the cemetery uses a plot of land belonging to state port operator PT Pelindo II, which plans to construct a canal and a freight terminal using the plot of land.
